City Council Approves Funding for Safe Routes to School Grant Application

The Aledo City Council approved a Resolution funding for City of Aledo Safe Routes to School Grant Application.  The federal grant program is administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation, which offers up to $200,000.00 in reimbursable grants. The City Council of the City of Aledo previously approved the construction of a walking path along Route 17 to an already existing sidewalk on SE 6th Street within the City.

The existing sidewalk on 6th Street provides a direct path to the elementary and intermediate schools in the City of Aledo, but the sidewalk is incomplete and in disrepair.  The City Council of the City of Aledo found it necessary and desirable to complete the missing sections of sidewalk and repair the existing sub-standard sections of sidewalk on 6th Street in order to provide a safe path to school.

If awarded, the grant would reimburse the City of Aledo up to $200,000 for project costs.  Hutchison Engineering, Inc. has provided a cost estimate for the construction and engineering of the project, including construction and construction engineering costs in the amount of $173,583.00 and preliminary engineering costs in the amount of $38,746.00.  The City pledged to fund preliminary engineering costs for the project in an amount of $38,746 upon the award of the grant.
