Demolition of the buildings that formerly housed cadets attending the Roosevelt Military Academy was recently completed. Valley Construction of Rock Island IL completed the project in 19 days. The project started December 4, 2017 and was finished December 23, 2017. Niles Hall was the first to be demolished followed by the North Barracks.
Limestone blocks and bricks were salvaged from both buildings along with some wood overhangs. A time capsule was found in the cornerstone block of Niles Hall. The time capsule was a copper box that was welded closed. The items that were located inside include a newspaper article from the groundbreaking of Niles Hall dated Saturday, April 19, 1930, two copies of The Junior Megaphone, (a newsletter written by the academy), a copy of the Illinois Military School five year Building Program and two copies of an Illinois Military School Booklet for the 1930-1931 school year.
The City of Aledo is looking at a possible memorial on the site.
